Domaine Jean François Ganevat

La Croix des Batailles - 2021 - Jean François Ganevat - Magnum

Jura

GANEVAT Jean François

Pinot from Alsace and jura, a cuvée sold through Ganevat’s négociant business, made with grapes sourced from vignerons who share Ganevat’s values and vision of natural viticulture. The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by semi-carbonic maceration with temperature control (12-14°C), and one year of maturation in barrels that have seen several wines. Bottled without fining, filtration, or the addition of sulphites.

Jean-François Ganevat represents the 14th generation of vignerons of his family in Rotalier, in the south of Jura. After years working as the cellar master of Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet, he took over his family’s estate in 1998. Ganevat converted the estate to organic viticulture the very same year, and then to biodynamic viticulture in 2006. Jean-François practices single-parcel selection, that is to say, one soil type, one grape variety = one cuvée. As a result, the estate produces 45 different cuvées every year – and don’t worry, it’s all good, or rather... extraordinary. He is THE master of natural wine vinification, the benchmark for an entire generation of young vignerons. The estate is only 8.5 hectares and the yields are low. Fortunately, Jean François and his sister Anne also set up a wine trading company. They buy grapes grown in Morgon, cultivated by vigneron friends who respect their vision of wine. Beautiful Gamay, vinified with foot treading, long carbonic maceration in truncated vats, indigenous yeasts and no sulphur added...
