SOGA Takahiko

Pinot Noir from vines farmed organically and planted at 60 metres altitude on clay and gravelly sand soils, over a volcanic andesite bedrock. The vineyard is planted 4 kilometres from the Sea of Japan, in the southern reaches of the island of Hokkaido. There, the vines enjoy a relatively dry climate in summer, yet during the winter months are covered in one metre of snow, protecting them from the region’s harsh cold. Vinification: Handpicked grapes, 40-day maceration in vats, with 95% whole bunches. Matured for one year in French oak barrels that have seen several wines, with an additional 5% matured in new oak barrels. Traditional bottling by gravity, without fining or filtration. The 2015 vintage marks the winemaker’s first year producing an entirely sulphur-free wine.
Takahiko Soga has become the undisputed master of Japanese Pinot Noir in just over a decade. This winemaker’s son, whose parents own Obus Winery, first studied microbiology at the University of Tokyo, but could never let go of his love for wine! In fact, following his studies, he joined Coco Farm Winery, an estate located one hour north of Tokyo, where he stayed for 10 years and was made cellar master. At the same time, he continued to travel around Japan and the world, and one meeting in particular would change the course of his life – his encounter with the Jura master Pierre Overnoy. Impressed and touched by the purity of his wines, he returned to Japan intent on finding the best climate for the cultivation of vines, and founding his own estate. His research led him to Hokkaido, the northern island of the Japanese peninsula. And so in 2010 was born the Takahiko Estate, which today covers 4.6 hectares around the town of Yoichi. In the vineyard as in the cellar, Takahiko shows a characteristically Japanese meticulousness, working with the precision of a jewellery maker, and always in harmony with the seasons. “I wish to be a winemaker who produces wine as quietly as possible, a craftsman with his own philosophy,” he muses. His aspiration is admirable... though his wines have nonetheless created quite the hubbub! With a production of Pinot Noir never exceeding 9,000 bottles, the very rare bottles that do make it all the way to France are snatched up almost immediately!
