Jaspis - 2015 - Hanspeter Ziereisen

Germany

ZIEREISEN Hanspeter

German Pinot Noir, from vines averaging 50 years old, planted between 1965 and 1970 on limestone soils. Using sustainable agriculture, the vines are nurtured throughout the year before being harvested by hand. Vinification: 50% whole grape bunches, traditional foot treading, spontaneous fermentation in closed vats using indigenous yeasts, gentle pressing, and 21 months of maturation in 225-litre oak barrels, 20% of which are new. Moderate use of sulphites.

Hanspeter Ziereisen is the head of his eponymous family estate in Efrigen-Kirchen in the Baden region, located very close to the French border. In fact, 60% of the vineyards are bordered by Alsatian vineyards! It would be incorrect to speak of Ziereisen as a strictly wine-growing estate, since it is in fact an 18-hectare polyculture farm where grapes are one of many crops grown! Although Ziereisen is not certified organic or biodynamic, human intervention in both the vineyard and winery is minimal. Today, members of four generations of the same family all work at the estate, together committed to producing terroir wines – wines that reflect the particularities of a small selection of vineyard parcels in an extremely precise and elegant manner. These wines are unmistakably German, but certain cuvées, notably Jaspis, can bring to mind one of the great Burgundies. Suffice to say, this is Pinot Noir on a very, very high level.
