Vrede Pinot Noir - 2017 - Hannes Storm

South Africa

STORM Hannes

100% Pinot Noir, from vines planted on Bokkeveld soils (poor soils, rich in clay and stones) and farmed using sustainable agriculture in the Hemel-en-Aarde region. The Vrede parcel faces north. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed, and cold macerated 10 days in open vats, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and 11 months of maturation in French oak barrels with 28% new oak. Neither filtered nor fined, with sensible use of sulphites.

Hannes Storm founded his eponymous estate in 2012 after 12 vintages spent working intimately with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Domaine Hamilton Russell, also located in the renowned wine region of Hemel-en-Aarde, 120 km from Cape Town. The history of the estate thus began actually quite recently, since it was only in 2008 that Hannes discovered two tiny plots of land with exceptional terroir and decided to plant the two great Burgundian grape varieties there. The first vintage was released four years later, and the bottles would be marketed for the first time in 2014. Storm's motto is "Wines with Personality and Character"! Indeed, the estate strives to highlight the characteristics of each parcel, thanks to very attentive viticulture, controlled yields, minimal intervention in the winery, and a desire to craft wines that pay homage to the Old Continent, and in particular to the cradle of Pinot noir, Burgundy.
