Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru - 2014 - Boris Champy

Burgundy

CHAMPY Boris

100% Pinot Noir from vines planted on this quasi Monopole vineyard site owned by the estate, classified as a Grand Cru. The Clos des Lambrays has gentle slopes providing exposure to sunlight from multiple directions. At the top of the Clos the soils are marly, while the bottom of the Clos is clay and limestone. The grapes are harvested by hand, with yields of about 35 hl/hectare. Vinification: 80% whole grape bunches, with slightly longer than usual alcoholic fermentation, gentle pressing, and 18 months of maturation in barrels, half of which are new oak.
Boris Champy was the cellar master of Clos des Lambrays for many years, and has now passed the torch to Jacques Devauges, the former manager of Clos de Tart who now in is charge of all the vinifications at the Domaine des Lambrays, including the Clos. Of course, the history of the estate begins centuries before both of these men, since the Clos was actually founded in 1365, as attested by the archives of the Cîteaux Abbey, and by a stone engraved with this date on the estate. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the Clos had become extremely fragmented, but original land registry maps of the area, today in the estate’s possession, testify to the will of successive owners in the 19th and 20th centuries to reconstitute the medieval Clos entirely. When the first appellations were created in 1936, Clos des Lambrays was listed in the category of the Premier Crus. However, experts would nonetheless classify it as a de facto Grand Cru. It was only in 1981 that the official and unofficial status finally became one and the same, when the Clos des Lambrays was acknowledged as a Grand Cru. At Les Lambrays, like everywhere in Burgundy, no vintage is quite like the last, but the estate nevertheless succeeds year after year in reaching an exceptional level of finesse and elegance.
